Amy Callaway English 3700 Dr. Rausch Workshop A6 Trouble in Pembroke, Georgia Many names are referenced in the beginning of the story for instance Fatu is called mamma and then Tara-Mae is called mama only later is it discovered that Abaja is the son of Tara- Mae and Fatu is the mother of Tara-mae. Adding in some appositives such as “said Fatu, Tara-Mae’s mother”. The two generation gap is difficult to keep track of before the reader is fully introduced to the family. The language and diction shows a great deal about the family but in some points could be lost in translation, “gemme her mind and troll over her actun”, I understand it to mean give me her mind and troll over her actions but the spelling causes the line to have to be reread before its fully understood (3). Drawing out words without using erroneous spelling could make the text more comprehensible. In Tara-Mae’s dream Emma-Gene tells her to drink a thin dark liquid and Tara-Mae drinks it without hesitation then sits it back down without a face. I imagine one would not so easily drink an unknown substance especially from a strange woman. There are no details
