The purpose of this experiment was to study the S N 2 reaction of bromocyclopentane with sodium hydroxide and characterize any products formed by refractive index and IR spectroscopy. Balanced Reaction: Br 1 + 1 NaOH H 2 O OH + 1 1 NaBr Mechanism of Reaction: Br H NaOH OH H Results: The product was isolated by three extractions with ether from the aqueous reaction mixture. The product was a colorless liquid with a faint sweet smell. An IR spectrum of the product (liquid suspension) was obtained (see attached) and the refractive index was measured. Refractive Index Product: n 20/D = 1.450 (Literature 1.453 1 ). Theoretical and Percent Yield % Yield = Theoretical Yield = 5.00 g CyPentBr x 1 mole CyPentBr 149 g x 1 mole CyPentBr 1 mole CyPentOH
