A = late fraction, B = early fraction A has more of the component having the longer retention time on GC, which has to be the higher boiling component. B has more of the shorter retention time component, which is the lower boiling component. Since the early fractions will contain more of the lower boiling component, A is the GC trace of the late fraction and B is the GC trace of the early fraction. 2a. Sample b contains both ethyl benzene and nitrobenzene. Sample c contains only phenol. (The highest Rf spot is the least polar compound ethyl benzene, the middle Rf spot is nitrobenzene, and the lowest Rf spot is the most polar compound phenol.) 2b. Ethyl benzene will elute first. 3. KOH reacts with cyclopentadiene to form the cyclopentadiene anion. (You could also show the answer by drawing out the reaction) + KOH H - K + (+ H 2 O) H H 4a. About 83 °C (any answer from 80 to 85 is acceptable). 4b.
