BIO 240-75 Fall 2009 Vocabulary, Concepts and Terms for Chapter 1 Introduction: Themes in the Study of Life Evolution-the process of change that has transformed life on Earth from its earliest  beginnings to the diversity of organisms today. Natural Selection-organisms with certain inherited characteristics are more likely to  survive and reproduce than organisms with other characteristics. Adaptation-inherited characteristics of an organism that enhances its survival and  reproduction in specific environments. Properties of Life- Emergent properties-new properties that arise with each step upward in the hierarchy of  life, owing to the arrangement and interactions of parts as complexity increases. Reductionism-the reducation of complex systems to simpler components that are more  manageable to study Levels of biological organization Biosphere-consists of all the environments on Earth inhabited by life (most regions of  land, bodies of wayer, and atmosphere to altitude of a few km). Ecosystem-consists of all the living things in a particular area, along with all nonliving  components of the environment with which life interacts. All of Earth's ecosystems
