Compound-substance consisting of two or more different elements in a fixed ratio. Emergent properties of a compound-a compound has characteristics different from those of its elements. Essential elements of life-COHN (carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen) make up 96% of living matter. Trace elements-elements that are needed in only minute quantities. Atom-smallest unit of matter that still retains the properties of an element. Atomic nucleus-protons and neutrons are packed together tightly here; dense core at the center of the atom.
