Week 4 Journal 2 Slavery in the United States lasted legally for approximately 90 years, from 1776 to 1865 until the 13 th Amendment. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation signed three years earlier which changed the legal status under federal law of millions of enslaved African Americans, many states still remained divided on the issue of indentured servitude. Perhaps there is a relationship here with the evolution of change in our country. T he 14 th Amendment purports that there are certain guaranteed rights for all citizens of the United States which are: privileges, immunities of citizenship, due process and equal protection. It furthermore upholds that no State shall make or enforce any laws that can abridge the privileges nor deprive citizens of life, liberty or property. Baker v. Nelson (1971) established the initial precedent regarding the validity of same-sex marriages. Unfortunately, this case failed to provide much clarity into this issue, but it did succeed in creating a substantial interest in its debate for years to come. The (Defense of
