Early in the 20th century, there was lots of debate about how nature worked as a community. The major questions were if the community was acting as one organized system of multiple species or if it was just a collection of multiple species acting independently with minimal integration. Two very different. theories surfaced: the organismal concept and the individualistic continuum concept. The organismal concept was developed by botanist Frederic Clements. He was born in Nebraska and witnessed the Dust Bowl so he witness first hand all of the abandonment of the agriculture land. His studies included watching the succession of the old fields over time.
