Europe has 3 main climate types Climate Temperate midlatitude: North Atlantic Drift and brings moderate temperatures and rain The Gulf Stream and the North Atlantic Drift originate in tropical western parts of the Atlantic Ocean, drift to the north and east, and cause the waters around Europe to be much warmer in winter The Gulf Stream – once it gets closer to Europe it then joins and becomes the broader North Atlantic Drift North Atlantic Drift – warm water current that brings large amounts of warm water Northwestern Europe Mediterranean: hot, dry summers/mild, rainy winters Southern Europe Humid continental: temperatures not moderated by the sea Eastern Europe Hot summers, cold, long winters London has approximately the same average temperature in January as Richmond, Virginia Death rates higher than birth rates In 2006, birth rates in Europe were the lowest on Earth, and for the region as a whole (negative rate of natural increase -.1)
