STATE UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK AT STONY BROOK Department of Sociology Sociology 200 Catherine Marrone, Ph.D. Medicine and Society SBS S429 Tel: 632-4883 Spring 2010 Offc Hrs Mon 2:30-3:30 MWF 10:40-11:35 Lt Eng 102 Fri 9:30-10:30 (also by appt) cmarrone@notes.cc.sunysb.edu Graduate Teaching Asst: Haryun Peun pphhrr@gmail.com See Blackboard for complete listing of Grad and Undergrad Teaching Assistant e-mail listings and office hours This course is the exploration of the connection between social structure and health. Using perspectives (and methods) uniquely sociological and addressing current public health concerns, students learn that health and illness are much more than the biomedical representations we have come to accept. In particular, the third and final section of the course focuses on our “graying” society. As a nation we appear wholly unready to deal with the dramatic demographic changes created by an aging population; a growing older cohort places great demand on the health care system as well as on many other social institutions. Therefore, a good deal of attention will be paid to the important social, political and economic questions surrounding health care reform [debates] today. Required readings can be purchased at “Stony Books,” located across from the (Stony Brook) Rail Road station, on the north side of 25A, as well as at the Main Campus Bookstore. These texts include: Phil Brown’s, Perspectives in Medical Sociology, 4th Ed (MS ) and Intersections of Aging: Readings in Social Gerontology, by Markson and Hollis-Sawyer
