1-29-09 Puritans * Made New England area seem as an area of elites * Migrate to Plymouth Boston, bring printing press and make it printing center of the country * 1700 there were 500,000 Euro-Americans in all colonies, Boston was largest colony * NE was where Puritans sought to have a voice in history, devoted to freedom and all thing religious, no fear because they were looked after by God. American was a “howling wilderness” overgrown, hidden from Gods eyes, where Indians are, no Christianity, and need to change this in gods eyes * Puritan philosophy is an interior one, self-examination * Puritans begin to hide from nature, thought to be a suspicious entity * Order and control of ones self was crucial (body), cleanliness is next to godliness, your body is the house for the soul * the drama of salvation, means to be born again T otal depravity – moral corruption, born with original sin U nconditional electon – your in heaven forever if you get there

so Bradford and the puritans put an ocean between them and England * signer of Mayflower Compact and governor * “Plymouth Plantation” land in Cape Cod and because of weather have to stay there and not go south like they were supposed to * Bradford rationalizing people dying as god having a hand in every event, many biblical allusions * There is a sense of fear, but Bradford deals with it with strong faith in god * Puritans survive on faith alone * The Plymouth Plantation, Bradford thought of new world as void of all civil inhabitants, and only savages * Mayflower compact, 1st gov in new world, set up because they did not land in England * The New England Primer, what was studied when the kids went to school. Provide “spiritual milk for American babes” the abc’s are in book * There is human evil, and it is inspired by satan Samuel Sewall (Calvinist) * Looking for a wife in his diary, was key for a man to be married for social reasons… men who were widowed would re- marry * Was a judge in witchcraft trials, was only judge who regretted it, went to Harvard and like theological dispute… marries Hanna
