ECH 146 Winter, 2009 Problem Set 6 Due 2/13/09 This problem set focuses on identification of rate expressions based on experimental measurements. NO COMPUTER SOFTWARE IS NECESSARY to complete these problems. 1. The reaction A B + C was carried out in a constant-volume batch reactor where the following concentration measurements were recorded as a function of time. Time (min) C A (mol / L) 0 2.00 5 1.61 9 1.34 15 1.10 22 0.86 30 0.72 40 0.53 60 0.34 i. Use two different methods to determine the reaction order and rate constant. ii. If you were to take more data, at what times would you take measurements? Why? 2. The liquid-phase reaction A + B C + D takes place in a batch reactor at 25ºC. Two experiments were carried out: one with equal molar feeds ( C A0 = C B0 = 0.1 mol/L), and the other with unequal molar feeds ( C A0 = 0.01 mol/L, C B0 = 0.1 mol/L).
