Give a brief explanation of diagenesis in sedimentary rocks and explain the difference between compaction and consolidation. Diagenesis is the changes in the physical properties of rocks, such as texture and composition, which take place after the sediment has been deposited. Compaction is the rearrangement of clasts into a tight pack structure. Typically, this happens when the material on top compresses the deeper sediments, bringing the grains closer together. Consolidation is the process of squeezing out the water from the pore spaces in between the grains. Consolidation occurs after compaction and is directly correlated, since compaction reduces the amount of space in between the grains, any water in the pore space will be pushed out. 2.
