Sam Adams was a radical. He did not like the fact that there were British troops stationed in America. Adams created America’s first systematic gathering and distributing of news. He named this “newspaper” the Journal of Occurrences.” It became immediately apparent that the purpose of Adam’s newspaper was to build opposition to the troops and the British by creating and spreading a record of horrible acts the British soldiers were committing against the colonists. Although none of what Adams wrote was true, it turned many colonists against both the British troops and the crown. Because of what Adams wrote, the British decided to withdraw the troops. Thomas Paine was the most important writer of the colonial era. Before the American Revolution, he published a pamphlet titled Common Sense in which he argued that men and women not only deserved, but also were obligated as citizens of the human race, to demand much more. Paine presented separation from Britain as the only viable option for the colonies and also described what
