This industry has irreversibly entered the new era of e- business, where traditional information technologies joined the Internet. In turn, the concept of outsourcing is the response strategy of airline companies seeking another edge of competitive advantage. One such response strategy is the IBM Global Services (IGS). Albeit designated to manage Canada’s major airlines IT operations it developed nowadays to the preferred IT architecture for shared airport systems. Various versions of Common Use Terminal Equipment (CUTE) information system architectures that enable airlines to share check- in terminals and reduce passenger congestion at airports are discussed in this paper. The conducted research reveals that some current integrated airport IT solutions include developments such as on-line distribution, ticket- less travel, self-service ticketing and smart cards. INTRODUCTION The worldwide travel and transportation industry is currently the world's largest industry. Its biggest segment, the airline industry, is estimated to be servicing over two billion air travellers per year by the year 2006 (SITA, 1999a). This is the reason why the airline industry, including airlines, airports, and global distribution systems, is extremely competitive and emphasising customer service and effective cost management. The airline industry relies heavily on the effective use of IT and communications in managing its day-to-day business (Bar-Shalom and Li, 1993; Fuhs, 1984; Schwartz, 1989; Stalling, 1998; Tekla, 1997) due to its global nature and inter- dependent activities. Moreover, to maintain the competitiveness and keep up with the stringent operation standards, the airlines are compelled to use state-of-the-art IT solutions. On the other hand, it is a rather expensive endeavour in terms of time, resources, and capital the design, implementation, software support, maintenance, and enhancing complex IT systems. And, perhaps more importantly, this is not a core business of airline companies. During the last decade, it is a common practice
