WEEK 7 DQ 1 How did the Civil War affect the home front? What was the connection between the home front and battlefront for both North and South? How did the strategy of total war affect the outcome and legacy of the war? The Civil War affected life on the home front as well as the battlefield. Both nations had heavily relied on their home front. Army men and men, in general, had to sustain the battlefront of the war. The home front had provided manpower, food, supply, and ammunition to fight the war. The North and South societies had to find ways to finance the war, including taxation to the civilian population and imposing tariffs on businesses. Families throughout the North and South faced shortages of supplies had their farms and homes destroyed, or in some cases confiscated to be used for the war effort. The roles of women and children were significantly changed. For the first time, many women took control of plantations or homesteads, acted as nurses on and off the battlefield, and even fought in combat. Families were torn apart as loved ones were sent off to fight.
