Unformatted text preview: Lecture 20 11/18/08 Eroica (the 3 rd Symphony) – Beethoven’s “heroic” piece. Originally a dedication to Napoleon Bonaparte . (Yet he was later disgusted by Napoleon’s empire dream and changed the title.) Eroica is based on Neoclassical style but expends it in style and scale. Emphasis on music’s artistic value than entertaining value . First Movement Sonata form, mostly used in first movement (sometimes in the last movement) Three main sections in Sonata form-- 1. Exposition o 1 st theme—Tonic o 2 nd counter theme—Dominant 2. Development —variation and restatement of two themes 3. Recapitulation —structure similar to Exposition: tonic-dominant-tonic I II III IV V Eь G Bь Exposition First theme—3/4, triple time; Second theme—duple time Development Portrait of a battle Recapitulation Resolution: 1 st theme and 2 nd theme synthesized together .
