Refractory- only seen in males, can't become stimulated in erection Masters and Johnson- excitement, plateau, orgasm, resolution Scrotum pulled closer to body, testes begin to elevate Vasocongestion-pooling of blood and genital tissue causes erection Nipples may harden and become erect Increase Hr, Bp, myotonia- muscle tension all over body Sex flush- changing of coloring of upper body- face and neck Excitement: Penis fully erect; testes swell and further elevate Cowper's gland secretion- preejaculate fluid Glans deepen in color, coronal ridge increases in diameter Prostate enlarges Takes amount of time for blood to flow out of penis- blue balls Women experience similar- time takes for blood to flow out of vagina longer than it did for orgasm If stimulation withdrawn before orgasm- resolution phase Plateau Next class Sexual arousal and cocaine cravings activate similar areas of brain- indicates they both stimulate reward areas of brain Brain Activation During Arousal Orgasm and ejaculation are two different things-most go together but not always First part of orgasm- contraction of vas, seminal vesicles, prostate forces ejaculate into bulb at base of urethra Once this has happen they lose ability to control ejaculation Internal sphincter of the bladder closes so semen doesn’t enter bladder Emission stage: Contraction of muscles at base of penis begin rhythmic Expulsion stage: Vagina very acidic- nearly 1/4 die Once sperm enters vagina it coagulates Sperm only viable or able to fertilize for 28 to 30 hours Numerous barriers between egg and sperm- high percentage of defective sperm, and the vagina's hostile acid environment, women's own defense system attacks the sperm and destroys them Some try to fertilize first round object they find
