21:28 Objective 28-1 The Seven Sins of Memory Three Sins of Forgetting o Absent-mindedness - inattention to details produces encoding failure (our mind is somewhere else as we lay down the car keys) o Transience - storage decay over time (as we part ways with former classmates, unused information fades) o Blocking - inaccessibility of stored information (seeing an old classmate, we may feel the name on the tip of our tongue, but we experience retrieval failure- we cannot get it out) Three sins of Distortion o Misattribution - confusing the source of information (putting words in someone else’s mouth or remembering a movie scene as an actual happening) o Suggestibility - the lingering effects of misinformation (a leading question- did Mr. Jones touch your private parts?- later becomes a young child’s false memory) o Bias - belief-colored recollections (a friend’s current feelings toward her fiancé may color her recalled initial feelings) One sin of Intrusion o Persistence- unwanted memories (being haunted by images of a sexual assault) Objective 28-2 Age can effect encoding efficiency…the brain areas that jump into action when young adults are encoding new information are less responsive among older adults… This slower encoding helps explain age-related memory decline Although older people tend to recall less than younger adults do, they usually remember as well as younger people when given reminders or a recognition test Objective 28-3 Hermann Ebbinghaus’ Forgetting Curve indicates that much of what we learn we may indeed quickly forget Forgetting is initially rapid and then levels off with time People who had been out of school for 3 years had forgotten much of what they had
