23:55 Emotion - a response of the whole organism involving physical arousal, expressive behaviors, and conscious experience James-Lange theory – the theory that our experience of emotion is our awareness of our physiological responses to emotion-arousing stimuli Cannon-Bard theory - the theory that an emotion-arousing stimulus simultaneously triggers physiological responses and the subjective experience of emotion Two-factor theory - Schachter-Singer’s theory that to experience emotion one must be physically aroused and cognitively label the arousal Polygraph - a machine, commonly used in attempts to detect lies, that measures several of the physiological responses accompanying emotion (such as perspiration and cardiovascular and breathing changes) Emotions are a mix of physiological arousal, expressive behaviors, conscious experience, including thougsh and feelings First comes conscious awarenesss, then physiological trimmings? JAMES LANGE THEORY Your feeling of fear follows your body’s response Your car skids on slick pavement…your hit the brakes and finally regain control. Just after the incidence, you notice your heart is racing, then, shaking with fright, you feel the whoosh of emotion You are sad because you cry, you are afraid because you tremble CANNON BARD THEORY The body’s responses are not distinct enough to evoke different emotions Does a racing heart signal fear? Anger? Love? Changes in heart rate, perspiration, and body temperature seemed too slow to trigger
