Chapter 27: Community Interactions Case Study: invasion of the zebra mussels: o The zebra mussel was brought in the hulls of ships and have changes the ecosystems around north America, mainly in the great lakes area where they have been known to clog water treatment plants. 27.1: Why are community interactions important? o a community consists of all the interacting populations within an ecosystem. o The process by which two interacting species act as agents of natural selection on one another over evolutionary time is called co evolution. o The relationships of competition, predation, parasitism and mutualism, shape the bodies and behavior of organisms. 27.2: What is the relationship between the ecological niche and competition? o The ecological niche defines the place and role of each species in its ecosystem. How competitive a species is within itself and between other species selects for adaptations in body form and behavior. Ecological niche is the organisms place in the ecosystem, which encompasses all aspects of its life—habitat, etc. o Competition occurs whenever two organisms attempt to use the same limited resources Competition is an interaction that may occur when two individuals or species attempt to use the same limited resources Interspecific competition is competition between species Intraspecific competition is competition within the same species o Adaptations reduce the overlap of ecological niches among coexisting species Competitive exclusion principle leads to the hypothesis that if two species with the same niche are placed together and forced to compete for limited resources,
