Unformatted text preview: Course Policies - Introductory Biology 152 Section 2, Spring 2010 (5 credits) Introductory Biology 151/153 - 152 is a two semester introductory sequence for majors in the biological sciences at the UWMadison. Learning Goals - Students will be able to: recall, apply and integrate biological concepts (e.g., evolution, metabolism) learned in IntroBio151 to solve physiological and ecological problems. describe how organisms sense and respond to their environment. interpret regulation of physiological and ecological systems using a conceptual model of feedback, and apply this model to analyzing novel systems. explain how form follows function in animals and plants , including the surface to volume ratio. use mathematical concepts to interpret, analyze and make predictions about biological data. explain the basic elements of the research process by which biologists study the natural world and communicate their findings. work productively and collaboratively as a member of a group. Specific learning objectives for the animal physiology, plant physiology and ecology units will be distributed during those sections of the course. Learning Venues: Three venues are offered in which students will have the opportunity to work cooperatively with the teaching team and with one another to master the learning objectives. Lecture (Tu/Th 2:30-3:45p 1351 Chemistry): Key biological concepts will be introduced and related to other concepts to help students create a comprehensive view of biology. Mini-lectures on specific topics will be given and students will work periodically and cooperatively in groups to solve problems designed to build and test their mastery of the material. Laboratory (223 or 226 Noland Hall check your timetable): Laboratory exercises will provide the opportunity to apply and extend basic concepts learned in lecture. Students will do hands-on experiments using the scientific method. In addition, the laboratory will stress development of oral and written scientific communication skills. Discussion (539 or 553 Noland Hall check your timetable): Discussion activities and graded exercises will reinforce concepts learned in lecture and laboratory and provide students the opportunity to ask questions and practice answering questions....
