Disconnect tools when not using them Introduction Denitrification filters (phrased also as NO 3 walls) can be used to successfully reduce the nitrate levels in storm water and wastewater discharges. Carbon containing materials are mixed with heterotrophic bacteria (present in most soil) to cause the denitrification effect to occur thus reducing nitrate levels. Organic materials, such as sawdust are acetic acid, are used in these types of remediation devices. Research suggests that the bacteria native to the soil will change the nitrates and nitrites to raw nitrogen, which can be released into the atmosphere. This can be represented by the formula for denitrification. NO
