Lec 7 – European Nation-State: Mercantilism to the Free Market Study Questions 1. Close Reading Question: In "On Policy," Voltaire reveals his philosophy of what most motivates humans, governments (domestic policy), and modern nation-states (foreign relations). Voltaire and Smith indicates that the world is changing and that the European nation is benefiting from the increase participation and influence in the world. The benefits in wealth, influence and power and are aware of this. Voltaire says the whole goal of the nation is to accumulate for your own country the greatest power of honor possible. He is observing how nation in Europe are focused on wealth and power and he talks about theoretical how that leads to the benefit of personal power but his story gives an idea that is being critical is happening.
