About Us Join Charles Drew Our Members Events Programs Gallery/Media Newsletters Resources Contact Us Vice President: Name: Komal Kothari, CC’12 Hometown: Edison, NJ Major: Neuroscience & Behavior (Concentration in Economics) Interests: t ennis, singing, research, cooking Favorite Quote: “Make your own kind of music.” ~Song by “Mama” Cass Elliot Why Medicine? Why Charles Drew? Becoming a doctor will be a great way to harness my love for science and use it to better lives. I think that there is a lot of room for improvement in medicine, both in terms of healthcare and biomedical research, and I hope that being a doctor will allow me to make a contribution to society. Many students on the Pre-medical track may find themselves overwhelmed. By being a member of Charles Drew, I hope to encourage students interested in medicine to stay on the pre-medical track. I can use Charles Drew as a forum to educate myself more about the medical field and also to share my experiences as a pre-medical student at Columbia. E-mail: [email protected] Senior Advisor: Name: Victor Thompson, CC’10 Hometown: Bronx, NY Major: Biological Sciences Interests: Protein Biochemistry, Interventional Cardiothoracic Surgery Favorite Quote: “The test of a first-rate intelligence is the ability to hold two opposed ideas in the mind at the same time, and still retain the ability to function.” ~F. Scott Fitzgerald Why Medicine? Why Charles Drew? Throughout my life I have come to realize that my God-given abilities would be best used if I commit to serving the sick, specifically through interventional cardiothoracic surgery. I believe in the Almighty Creator, and, in humbling myself enough to hear and understand Him, I have come to the conclusion that the best vocation for me is to dedicate my life to helping mankind defeat the atrocities of cardiovascular disease. First-hand experience with low-income communities has shown me the state these people are in due to poor healthcare and thus poor health. The statistics show that doctors from minority and underrepresented backgrounds are more likely to work in these areas where improved healthcare is needed the most, hence me dedicating my life to raising the number of minority and underrepresented doctors in the United States and hopefully someday throughout the world. E-mail: [email protected] or [email protected] Home Mission Statement : The Charles Drew Pre-Medical Society is an organization that strives to guide, support, and encourage pre-medical students, with a special emphasis on underrepresented minorities, in their various endeavors to become members of the medical field.
