10/22/09 on center, off center -white center -off center then will be excitatory surround -cones: bipolar cells, make synapses directly on ganglion cells -what sort of synapses would synapses be making on ganglion cell if: red on-center, green inhibitory ganglion cell? -on surround if shine green light -what sort of synapses would G R B cones have to make? --red cones make synapses, blue and green cones do not -if blue and green did, the center cell would be white -what about surround? -if green inhibitory surround, then only green cones will make synapse -to get appropriate responses in nervous systems it’s important who makes and who doesn’t make synapses -this is an on center ganglion cell: -what must be the nature of the synapses that the red cones make on this ganglion cell? -would they be depolarization or hyperpolarization? -would be hyperpolarization, decreases the excitatory transmitter, increases the excitatory effect -when transmitter release transmitter gets reduced, ganglion cell would see reduction in inhibitory transmitter -synapses on cone would be releasing per usual
