Only the problems indicated with * will be discussed during the tutorial time. Solutions to this problem set will be posted at the Course Website. 1. The diameter of the central one-third of a 50mm diameter steel rod is reduced to 20mm, forming a three segment rod shown in Figure 1. For the loading shown, determine the axial stresses in the three respective segments (1), (2), and (3). 2.* Two bolts are used to form a joint connecting rectangular bars in tension as shown in Figure 2.
