The diameter of the central onethird of a 50mm diameter steel rod is reduced to 20mm, forming a three
segment rod shown in Figure 1. For the loading shown, determine the axial stresses in the three
respective segments (1), (2), and (3).

Two bolts are used to form a joint connecting rectangular bars in tension as shown in Figure 2.
Determine the required diameter of the bolts if the average shear stress for the bolts is not to exceed
140MPa for the given loading.
