The cast material is first hot rolled to remove defects and convert cast structure to a wrought structure. The product of first rolling operation is called a bloom or slab or billets . The surface of hot rolled materials are first treated or conditioned to remove surface scales before cold rolling into required shapes and thickness. Level rolls are used to maintain flatness of rolled sheet. ISE 2204 – Introduction to Manufacturing Processes – Spring 2009 Grain Structure in Hot Rolling Grain Structure in Hot Rolling Changes in the grain structure of metals during hot rolling. This is an effective method to reduce grain size and refine the microstructure in metals, resulting in improved strength and good ductility.
