Hunter College- Department of Film and Media Studies Film 101: Introduction to Cinema Fall 2009 Prof. Josh Grumet joshuagrumet@yahoo.com Office hours: Monday 11:15am-12:15pm (or by appointment) Film 101 meets twice per week- Monday morning for lecture and discussion in 507 HN (Sections 1 and 2) or C114 (Section 3) and Thursday afternoon in HW615 for a film or lecture (3:10-5:00). Film 101 is an introduction to the art, industry and influence of the movie making business. We will look at all three stages of film production in addition to the history of film while studying both contemporary and classic movies. We will also examine the context in which movies are made as well as the subtext of important films. The subtext is the underlying message in a film and most, if not all, good films have meanings that are somewhat obscured by the entertainment value of the story. We want to look at all aspects of cinema and we will view films in class, in the lecture hall on Thursdays and on our own. Text: The book we will be using this semester is Making Sense of Movies by Robert Stanley, available at Shakespeare and Co., located at 939 Lexington Ave. There may also be reading material posted on Hunter’s Blackboard website. If for some reason you cannot obtain the text, please inform me immediately. Grades, Quizzes and Exams will cover all previous material- textbook and films. Quizzes are multiple choice or short answer. Exams are a mix of multiple choice, short and long answer. Grades will be based on attendance, participation, quizzes, mid-term and final. There will be 9 quizzes (almost every week) on each chapter of the text and films covered in class. Read the textbook and you will be prepared for the quizzes. There are no make-up quizzes or exams. Only a medical emergency with a note from a physician will warrant a make-up quiz or exam. Films on the syllabus that say “
