Math 53: Multivariable Calculus Fall 2009 TuTh 3:30-5, 155 Dwinelle Hall Instructor: Edward Frenkel office: 819 Evans Hall, tel. 643-9216 e-mail: [email protected] office hours: TuTh 5-6:30 Course homepage: http://math.berkeley.edu/ frenkel/Math53 Prerequisites: Math 1A, 1B Textbook: J. Stewart, Calculus: Early Transcendentals , UCB Custom Version for Math 53, or Sixth Edition, Brooks/Cole Publishing Co. In this course we will study functions in several variables and operations on them, such as integration and partial differentiation. The weekly reading schedule for the whole semester is given on the course Web page. Students are required to do the assigned reading before each lecture. In addition to lectures, students will meet for 3 hours each week in sections taught by the TAs to discuss the material of the lectures and the homework. Weekly quizzes will be given in the sections. Homework: Weekly homework assignments are available on the course Web page. Problem sets get rather heavy at times. This is intentional as sometimes there is no substitute for repetitive
