Chem 4701 Inorganic Chemistry Spring 2010 (1/13/10 version) MWF 12:20 - 1:10 pm in 231 SMITH HALL Instructor: Prof. Lawrence Que, Jr. (343 Smith Hall, larryque@umn.edu, 625-0389) Instructor Office Hours: MWF @ 10:30-11:40 AM , other hours by appt TA: Andrew Fielding (182 Kolthoff Hall, fiel0201@umn.edu, 624-8347) Office hours will be held in 193 Kolthoff on M 1:30-3:00 PM, and Th 12:00- 1:30 PM ; help may also be obtained from the class web site and at review sessions to be held a few days prior to exams. Text: Housecroft and Sharpe, “Inorganic Chemistry”, Prentice-Hall, 3rd Ed., 2008 Supplementary text: Similar topics are discussed in the textbooks by Shriver and Atkins and by Miessler and Tarr. You may want to consult with these books if you want a somewhat different perspective or writing style. Examinations: Midterm exams will be scheduled during class time. Each midterm exam will emphasize topics covered in the preceding weeks; however, earlier material usually serves as a foundation for understanding the more recent topics and thus may also be included . Exams will primarily cover reading, the topics covered in lectures and problem sets. Four midterm exams are scheduled for the semester in addition to the two-hour final. The dates are as follows: EXAM 1 Friday Feb 12 (material thru 2/08) EXAM 2 Friday Mar 5 (material thru 3/01) EXAM 3 Wednesday Apr 7 (material thru 4/02) EXAM 4 Wednesday Apr 28 (material thru 4/23) FINAL Tuesday May 11 1:30-3:30 pm SMITH 231 No make-up exams will be given. However, your lowest midterm exam score will be dropped. A missed exam will automatically be the one that is dropped. If a second midterm exam is missed, it is recommended that the student withdraw from the course. If there is a valid (i.e. medical) reason for missing the final, it must be cleared with the
