9/29/09 Song: Born to be wild- ? Issues in Infant Physical Development Breastfeeding When babies are born moms do not have breast milk per se it make take a couple of days but they have colostrum (clear yellow fluid- full of antibodies) -Begins with colostrums- really good for the baby- baby doesn’t need that much- by day 3 it will transition to milk- 8% of women are incapable of producing milk- baby nursing depends on how much milk mom will produce- the baby sucks the mom produces milk, the more you put your baby to breast the more milk you will make -AAP recommends exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months- nothing else! -AAP recommends breastfeeding for at least one year- around 6 months or so babies start to want something else and you can introduce other foods do it gradually and singularly. -Research suggests natural age of weaning is between 2-6 years of age- world health recommends breastfeeding until age 2 Currently about two-thirds of US mothers initiate breastfeeding- in the hospital they star Breast-feeding and by 3 months a lot have stopped and by 6 months even more and by year only a few do Advantages of Breastfeeding for the Baby -Best nutritionally -IQ differences favor breastfed babies (3-8 points) -Breast milk is designed for brain development- promotes neural growth Babies who breastfeed at least six months have: -Fewer gastrointestinal infections- including ones that are fatal -Fewer respiratory infections -Fewer doctor visits -Fewer allergies- fewer food and in general -Lower incidence of adult obesity- babies regulate their own milk when they are bottle fed the parents regulate their food -Lower incidence of SIDS Advantages of Breastfeeding for the Mother -Reduces chances of hemorrhage right after birth- when you breastfeed the body releases oxitosin which makes the uterus contract and mom bleeds after birth and when they breastfeed the uterus tightens up so you won’t bleed as much -Lower incidence of breast cancer- long-term and especially mom who have babies young -Cheaper- formula is expensive! (around $1,100-$1,900 a year for formula) -Ecological- it is greener -Convenient -Promotes bonding

Breastfeeding Issues -Sexualization of the breast -Really convenient? - If breast and baby aren’t together a lot of the time for example if your job is away from the house it could pose a huge problem and at night the mom is always the one up with the baby- breastfeeding and working outside the home can be challenging and sleeping issues (breast milk is easy to digest so they will wake more) - if they want to keep doing it they have to pump -When to wean? - Introducing something that isn’t breast milk- should be 2-4 years but in our culture it is not -Difficult getting started- babies don’t instinctively know how to breast feed they can’t just suck on the nipple needs to get areola- will hurt a lot is baby just sucks on nipple skin will chaff and fall off
