11/12/09- No song played Emotional and Social Development in Middle Childhood Peers Peer Acceptance Popular Children- they have good social skills and are well liked by teachers and peers and they are leaders and when children are asked “who do you want to play with most” or “who do you want to sit next to” and these children get the most votes Rejected Children- poor social skills and they get the most votes in “who do you want to play with least Controversial Children- get mixed votes, some children want to play with them the most and some the least these are usually kids who are bullies or kids who stick up for other kids Neglected Children- these children get no votes and their social skills are usually fine they are just not popular Determinants of Peer Acceptance Popular children have good social skills Rejected Children display two subtypes: 0. Rejected-aggressive children- at risk for developmental problems- bullies either physically or relationally- they like to start fights 1. Rejected-withdrawn children- at risk for developmental problems- victims of rejected aggressive children-they are meek and mild and have poor social skills but they get into trouble as well -Both types are associated with violence and school shootings Attention Deficit Disorder and Learning Disabilities Attention Deficit Disorder - not a new disease just the name is new, same symptoms History: 2. 1950’s “Fidgety” 3. 1960’s Hyperkinetic 4. 1980’s ADD 5. 1987 ADHD
