The blizzard in hell – Found in Canto 34 of Dante’s Inferno, lowest level of the 9th circle of Hell, the ultimate traitors, who have betrayed their lord (spiritual or temporal), Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Christ, Brutus and Cassius, who betrayed Julius Caesar; these three souls are gnawed by the three mouths of Lucifer, the fallen archangel, here is the ultimate contrapasso (evil lives off itself). “Stinging fly” – Socrates purpose to the city, messenger from God, rouses/persuades/provokes all to awake from their slumber, slumber is associated with ignorance. The golden bough - This is the key to returning from the underworld (one critic has identified it as mistletoe growing on an oak tree; another as Plato’s philosophy). Judas/Brutus/Cassius – The ultimate traitors who have betrayed their lord, Judas (spiritual) betrayed Christ, Brutus and Cassius (temporal) betrayed Julius Caesar, all three gnawed by the three mouths of Lucifer. Diabolos – Literally means “the charge,” “Guilty of refusing to recognize the gods of the state and of introducing other new divinities, corrupting the youth, making the weaker argument the stronger. The penalty demanded is death.” Charon - (The boatman), Ferries people across the land of the dead; he requires a penny as fare; this is why coins were placed on the eyes of the recently deceased, as fare for the boatman.
