Be able to identify the study design from an abstract or short description Instructions: Read titles and abstract of the following articles posted on b-space: o Occupational factors and risk of Parkinson’s Disease; Firestone, et al o Snoring as a risk factor for Type II diabetes; Al-Delaimy et al. o Having a personal healthcare provider and receipt of adequate cervical and breast cancer screening; Cardarelli, et al. Fill in the following table using your notes and slides from lecture: STUDY DESIGN Descriptive or Analytic? Timeframe for measurement of exposure/outcom e Observational or Experimental ? Study of: Individuals or Population? Advantages Disadvantages Cross- sectional Analytic Both measured at the same period of time Observational Individual Quick, inexpensive, easy Cannot asses risk or infer causality because exposure and outcome measured at the same time Case-control Analytic Outcome measured before exposure Observational Individual Good for rare outcomes Selection of controls may be tricky! Retrospective Cohort Study Analytic Goes back in time, but exposure is measured before outcome Observational Individual Good for rare exposures, usually less expensive and easier than a prospective cohort because data has already been collected Limited in that you can only look at data that has already been collected Prospective Cohort Study Analytic Goes forward in time, but exposure measured before Observational
