6B: Qualitative Analysis of Aldehydes and Ketones Antonio Alarcon Chem 243B 3/03/08 I. Abstract In this experiment, students were to accurately identify three unknown compounds S(AK011), L(AK018), L(AK005) from a pool of possible aldehydes and ketones. To do so, the following tests were implemented: melting point (MP) determination, boiling point (BP) determination, IR spectra interpretation, Tollens’ test, Schiff’s test, and 2,4-DNP testing. The identities of the above listed compounds are as follows: S(AK011) as m -nitrobenzaldehyde, L(AK018) as butanal, L(AK005) as pinacolone.

Identification o Solids MP IR spectra o Liquids BP IR spectra o Tests Known (Positive) Known (Negative) Unknown 3.
