6B: Qualitative Analysis of Aldehydes and Ketones Antonio Alarcon Chem 243B 3/03/08 I. Abstract In this experiment, students were to accurately identify three unknown compounds S(AK011), L(AK018), L(AK005) from a pool of possible aldehydes and ketones. To do so, the following tests were implemented: melting point (MP) determination, boiling point (BP) determination, IR spectra interpretation, Tollens’ test, Schiff’s test, and 2,4-DNP testing. The identities of the above listed compounds are as follows: S(AK011) as m -nitrobenzaldehyde, L(AK018) as butanal, L(AK005) as pinacolone.

II. Introduction In order to adequately identify each presented unknown the following procedure was followed: 1. Determine solubility 2. Identification o Solids MP IR spectra o Liquids BP IR spectra o Tests Known (Positive) Known (Negative) Unknown 3. Synthesis o 2,4-DNP and Semicarb if necessary NOTE - Contrary to the above mentioned procedure, respective solubilites were not taken into account due to the fact that the provided compounds were pure

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
