Lecture 2 History of Evolutionary Thinking 1. Darwin and the Origin of Species [went against common view of creationism] a. All organisms evolved from a common ancestor (descent with modification) b. Mechanism was natural selection 2. Church view that Earth was 5668 years old – Archbishop James Ussher a. Current scientific thinking says Earth is 4.6 billion years old 3. Influences of Darwin: a. Carolus Linneaus (1707-1778) – classified organisms into hierarchy species were given a genus and species (Musca domestica) & believed all was divine plan b. George Cuvier (Paleontology) – Established extinction from fossils and believed in catastrophism c. Hutton and Lyell (Geology) – believed in Gradualism and Uniformitarianism [same geologic process in past as today] d. Lamarck (Evolution) – famous for “Inheritance of acquired characteristics” since it was first to suggest evolution. Changes are inherited and organs change with use and deteriorate with disuse [i.e. giraffe and their long necks] e. Malthus (Economics) – believed that population growth was too fast for food production 4.
