2/22/10 CONFEDERATE CIVILIANS: PHYSICAL  HARDSHIP -Unlike Union civilians, Confederate civilians usually experienced the war personally. -Confederate civilians had their homes destroyed, property seized, crops ruined, and enemy armies march through their towns. -The experiences of such devastation created a permanent gap between Union and Confederate civilians.

2/22/10 CONFEDERATE WOMEN -Similar to the Union, Confederate women were forced to take over management of farms, plantations, and their families. -Civil War completely overturned traditional southern gender roles, forcing women to take a more active role in private and public life. -Women often formed the backbone of Confederate morale, urging men to continue to fight.

2/22/10 SLAVERY IN THE MIDST OF WAR -Southerners claimed slaves were happy but in reality whites were deathly afraid of what slaves might do without white supervision. -Some slaves ran away to Union lines while others stayed loyal to their masters. -Some slaves even worked as spies for the Union army behind the Confederate lines.
