 2/22/10 -Confederacy had reversed its fortunes from  earlier in the year, throwing back most Union  attacks. -General Lee now fully in charge of the Army of  Northern Virginia with the support of the populace. CONFEDERACY PRE-BATTLE

 2/22/10 -Union had suffered numerous setbacks in the  East. -General McClellan did little but call for  reinforcements.  President Lincoln started looking  for a new general. -Lincoln created a new Army of the Valley and  selected General John Pope to command it. -Pope had some success but his critics said he  UNION PRE-BATTLE
