Jason Mull 02-10-09 The Palestinians “ Palestine and the Arab-Israeli Conflict” (Charles D. Smith) Rediscovering Palestine: Merchants and Peasants in Jabal Nablus, 1700-1900 ” (Beshara Doumani) This week’s readings taken from Doumani’s book, Rediscovering Palestine, is, essentially, an answer to the problem in Palestinian historiography which he presented in the essay we read last week. That is, it is meant to be a contribution to a “bottom-up” view of Palestinian history during the Ottoman period, and is an attempt to re-write Palestinian inhabitants into the Palestinian historical narrative. Instead of focusing on grand political events, the study narrows its focus to the role of peasants and merchants in urban-commercial networks. It describes how various actions and initiatives of the peasant class helped to define their sense of identity, and shaped their understanding of their connection to the land. The work focuses mainly on the Jabal Nablus region and the first chapter attempts to
