Jason Mull 2-10-08 Big History Dear Dad, I have been learning many great and wonderful things up here; absorbing and entertaining a variety of challenging and deeply beautiful thoughts. I thought it might interest you to hear about a handful of the things that I’ve gathered here and there about this vast and complex cosmos in my “Big History” class, which, if you remember, I spoke fondly of to you on the telephone. I know that science is one of your great loves and passions, and so I hope you’ll get a kick out of some of this. The goal of the course is a broad, and therefore fuller view, of the history of not only humanity, but of all life, the earth, and the cosmos as a whole. The course attempts to look at all things in terms of their intricate past; the great intertwining stories which give context to and explain the present. In one of our early lectures our professor provided an interesting analogy for the passage of time and the past in general, which particularly struck me, and I think might strike you as well.
