Nov 24 II WHY BRAZILIAN ELITES HAVE WANTED TO CONTROL THE FATE OF THE AMAZON -resources -geopolitics -worrying about vulnerability because of the lack of infrastructure in the Amazon -foreigners crossing borders (rebels from Colombia, etc.) = security issues -guerilla movement III MILITARY DESIGNS ON REGION DURING MILITARY RULE (1964-1985) -why increased interest? -control of government, project of national development by bringing Amazonians in -development projects the regime set in motion -exploitation and exploration -cattle ranching -privately owned, offered subsidies, no taxes (agribusiness expansion) -single most devastating to rainforest -land is left unusable after a couple of years, so they expand more -mineral exploitation -public enterprises and multinational enterprises -road building -army core of engineers only ones with means and ability to build infrastructure -VERY talented army engineers -wanted to compete with other South American nations who were also building roads and developing IV AMAZON DESTRUCTION CANCELLED
