The Transgender Struggle America’s past has shown that change for the better good is possible, and if fought hard for, equal rights for anyone can be earned. The challenges that America has faced in the recent year includes the equal rights for African American, women’s rights, and same-sex marriages. However, there is still one struggle that is slowly being addressed and brought up to the public, which is the unequal rights and ways transgender people are treated. The struggles that transgender people experience include issues with health care, the confusion to what bathrooms they can or can’t use, and the harassment they face among strangers, friends, and even family member. The transgender community has the right be treated equally and to use the bathroom they are most comfortable in without any social repercussions. Public restrooms are seen as a political space in society because of how society ignores the feelings of those who are queer or transgender. When the transgender community is prevented from using the bathroom of their choice, there are deep emotional problems that happen. Among these problems are large amounts of depression and anxiety spread across the transgender community. In many cases, transgender members lack family and peer support, which leads to severe depression. Because of this, suicide rates amongst transgender adolescents are the highest they have ever been.
