IAH 204: Asia and the World Professor Keith Fall 2008: Asia and the World in the Age of Empire Unit One Paper Topics This is the first of four possible writing assignments for the course. You are required to complete three of the four. Please remember that there is no extra credit for writing all four papers – if you write all four, we will count the grades for the first three assignments that you complete. The first writing assignment is due Tuesday, September 16, in class, in hard copy. Late papers will not be accepted under any circumstances. For the first writing assignment, write a 4-5 page paper, double- spaced, 12 point font, one-inch margins, that answers one of the following questions. 1) Evaluate the following statement: “We can learn a lot about Asian history and culture by reading travel accounts written by people like Alvaro Vehlo (an officer on Da Gama’s ship and the author of the journal), Julia Corner and Karl Friedrich August Gutzlaff.” – is this a reliable source or not
