Psy 205 Notes 3/2/2020 & 3/4/2020 Chapter 6: Surveys and Observations Construct Validity of Surveys and Polls Choosing Question Formats o Open-ended: people write their responses Good for demographic questions Good for answers that have a wide number of responses Harder to analyze o Close-ended Limitations: Only have a few options that people can pick from Easier to analyze Only have a limited number of possible responses Likert Scale: at least has five options Has an odd number of options so that neutral can be in the middle Writing well-worded questions: The way you word the questions reflects how people will respond o Question wording matters Leading Questions: suggest to the person answering it that it is how you want that person to answer it Leads the witness to the preferred answer Double-barreled questions: ask two different questions Solve it by separating into two questions Negative Wording: double negative Questions order: the way they answer question 1 should not reflect how they answer question 2 Encouraging accurate responses o People can give meaningful responses
