Running head: METROLINK 2 Good and Evil on the Rails Who Robert Sanchez is a train engineer that worked at Metrolink. Having loved locomotives from a very young age, he eventually became a train engineer. Well known to the managers and regulators at place of work, he would get away with the disrespect for the set rules. Eventually, one day, his conduct led to an accident that resulted in deaths and fatalities. When On Friday, September 12, 2008, Robert Sanchez woke up to a beautiful morning and endeavored to begin his job. However, as records would later show, he was found texting and calling many times. This act caused him not to see certain signals that would guide him to stop at certain points. A collision occurred between the train being controlled by Sanchez and another train. Additional results from autopsy conducted showed that Sanchez was under control of drugs and was obese. Results from the train engineer of the other train showed he had used marijuana. Both these train drivers knew that their actions were wrong yet proceeded to go on duty. How The main cause leading to the Metrolink accident was the failure by Sanchez to call out double signals while he was operating the train. While running the train, he made a total of four different phone calls, sent out 21 messages via text and received 21 messages. Another indirect cause for the accident arises from the absence of a safety measure to avert the accident from happening. Regardless of the failure by Sanchez to call out the two signals, the trains still went on with their operation and head towards their final destinations, ultimately meeting at a point and leading to the fatal collision. Why
Running head: METROLINK 3 The failure by Sanchez to notice the signals and respond to them is the immediate reason for why the trains had to meet at a crossing owing to timings. His use of the mobile phone directly distracted him not to notice the signs on the railroads each single time. His failure to also communicate adequately at all times led to this . Recommendations While on duty and controlling machines it is important for the operators to be always keen and not use any digital devices that would be a point of distractions. Therefore, there should be policies in place against this. The use of GPS is important in showing location, schedules, and speeds of trains at any given times. Displays that are computerized have to be in place to guide everyone adequately. Computer installations for data recording are vital to send information to other users.
