ME 246 In-term exam 3, 2.12.2009, 110 minutes ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1) (25 pts.) Given the pipe assembly shown on the right. The inner and outer diameters of the pipe are 38 mm and 42 mm, respectively. a) Determine the principal stresses and principal directions at point H located at the top of the outside surface of the pipe. b) Determine the maximum shearing stress at the same point and its directions. 2) (25 pts.) The air tank below has an inner diameter of 450 mm and a wall thickness of 6 mm. The tank is cantilevered and both ends are closed off. The gage pressure of air in the tank is 1.2 MPa. In addition , a load of 5 kN is applied as shown. Determine the stress state (i.e., the overall normal and shear stresses) at points a and b . (Use an axis system consisting of the tank axis and two cross-sectional axes.) 3) (25 pts.) The cantilever beam shown below consists of a Z profile
