Amy Linkous 10/14/09 CHEM 2556, CRN: 91653 Oxidation of Cyclohexanol Using Sodium Hypochlorite Objective: To investigate the oxidation of a secondary alcohol to a ketone. General Reaction: Procedure: 16 mL cyclohexanol and 8.0 mL glacial acetic acid were placed in a 3-necked round bottom flask along with a stir bar. 115 mL sodium hypochlorite was poured into an addition funnel and the funnel was stoppered and inserted into one of the necks of the flask. A condenser was placed in the middle neck and a thermometer adapter with thermometer was placed in the third neck. About ¼ of the bleach solution was added to the reaction flask and the mixture was stirred. The stirring was maintained and the rest of the bleach was added over a 15 minute period, with the addition rate being adjusted to keep the reaction temperature between 40 and 45
