Amy Linkous 10/7/09 CHEM 2556: CRN: 91653 Synthesis of a Polyamide Objective: To synthesize Nylon-6,10 in order to demonstrate step-growth polymerization. General Reaction: Procedure: This reaction was performed in pairs of students. 2 mL decanedioyl dichloride was measured into a beaker using a 1-mL syringe and was dissolved in 100 mL dichloromethane. 1.1 g crystalline 1,6-hexanediamine was placed in a separatory funnel with 2.0 g sodium carbonate and 50 mL water, and the funnel was gently shaken to dissolve the reactants. The tip of the funnel was centered about 1 cm above the surface of the solution in the beaker. One student held
