Amy Linkous 9/14/09 CHEM 2556: CRN: 91653 Hydration of Alkenes Objective: To prepare hexan-2-ol from 1-hexene using sulfuric acid. General Reaction: Procedure: Approximately 2.5 g of ice was placed in a round-bottom flask with a magnetic stir bar and 7.6 mL of sulfuric acid was carefully added. 5.0 mL of 1-hexene was then added in 1.0 mL aliquots with stirring. After each mL was added the mixture was stirred until emulsion occured before the next mL was added, being careful to stop the addition and allow the mixture to cool to room temperature if the exotherm became excessive. After the mixture was homogeneous and at room temperature, the remaining 5.0 mL of 1-hexene was added in 1.0 mL aliquots as before and the mixture was allowed to emulsify again.
