Amy Linkous 10/21/09 CHEM 2556, CRN: 91653 Friedel-Crafts Acylation Objective : To perform Friedel-Crafts acylation of ferrocene and identify the product. General Reaction: Procedure: 0.56 g ferrocene, 0.85 mL acetic anhydride and 15 mL dichloromethane were placed in a dry three-necked round-bottom flask with a stir bar. A nitrogen inlet, bubbler and septum were fitted to the flask and the system was flushed with nitrogen gas for several minutes. The solution was stirred and 1.25 mL boron trifluoride etherate was added dropwise by syringe, after which the reaction mixture was stirred for 30 minutes while still under nitrogen gas. A small sample was taken after the given time period and compared with the starting material by thin layer chromatography using 1 percent methanol in chloroform as a solvent.
